Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father Sameshwar Singh was part of the British Indian Army and played hockey for the Army. You can say that hockey was in his blood.
Due to his father being in the army, they used to be transferred again and again, due to which Dhyan Chand's studies were up to the sixth grade, but Dhyan Chand never let the impact of this in his game.
Major Dhyan Chand Enlisted in Army:
As a child, Dhyanchand used to play hockey with his friends from a tree branch with a cloth ball. Once, when he went to watch a game of hockey with his father, he saw the opposition team losing and said that if I were in this team, it would have resulted in something else.
An officer standing there heard this and allowed him to go to the game and on seeing Dhyan Chand surprised all the spectators by scoring 4 goals because at that time Dhyan Chand was just 14 years old. Seeing his unique talent, he was recruited in the army at the age of 16. And from that time he started playing hockey on behalf of the army.
Funny story behind Dhyan Chand from Dhyan Singh:
Due to Army duty during the day, Dhyan Chand used to practice at night, but there was a problem at night also, due to lack of light, Dhyan Chand used to practice in the light of the moon. Due to which his friends started calling him Chand and from that his name became Dhyan chand.
Career in Hockey:
In the initial phase, his hockey game was limited to army hockey but luck was allowed to be something else. At the age of 21, he was selected in the Indian team going to New Zealand for a hockey match.
India won 18 out of 21 matches in this match. And Dhyanchand was promoted to the position of Lance Naik for his outstanding performance in this game.
1928 Olympics:
Dhyanchand got the opportunity to represent the country for the first time in the 1928 Olympics in Amerstdrum. At that time, he was only 23 years old. The player who scored the most goals in this match was Dhyanchand, he scored 14 goals out of the total 23 goals scored by the Indian team and won the Gold medal there.
He was then made the captain of the Indian team at the 1932 Berlin Olympics.
On 15 August 1936, India defeated Germany 8–1 in the match and captured the gold medal. The match was watched by thousands of spectators and dictator Hitler, who was so impressed with Dhyan Chand's game that he invited Dhyan Chand to play for Germany but Dhyanchand flatly refused.
Dhyan Chand has scored more than 400 goals in 22 years of his hockey life, which is very difficult for any player to do. In 1956, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honor of the Government of India, for his amazing feat.
On August 29, we celebrate Dhyanchand ji's birthday as National Sports Day. It is said that by watching Dhyan Chand's charismatic game, In Holland, his hockey was broken and examined to see if any magnets had been hidden in it.
And also in Japan, his hockey lab was tested whether he used glue in his hockey. Such a wonderful player who is so devoted to his country. Such people come only once in centuries. We salute such brave people.
